Such type of system is generally referred as E-STATCOM (STATCOM+ES) in the literature. In this paper, a Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) is used as a STATCOM and energy storage is integrated at the DC link of MMC. An E-STATCOM primarily functions as a STATCOM, but it has the ability to support active power at different time scale.
The E-STATCOM can be formed by integrating an energy storage system with a STATCOM, which provides both active and reactive power support simultaneously or whichever is needed. A power electronic converter is the heart of this kind of support system, which is mostly decided by the voltage and power rating for which it is intended to be designed.
A STATCOM works by providing three-phase AC output voltage with a controllable magnitude and phase angle. This is achieved through a VSC control circuit that synchronizes the STATCOM's voltage and frequency with the power system. Notably, the power exchanged by the STATCOM with the power system is only reactive, meaning it does not supply or consume real power.
This paper presents a review of STATCOM control in wind- and/or PV-interfaced power systems. STATCOM control enhances system performance by addressing key stability issues related to rotor angle stability, voltage stability, and resonance stability.
