The budget for the sixth Contracts for Difference (CfD) allocation round – confirmed by the Chancellor at Spring Budget – signals large-scale government backing to drive further investment into the UK’s thriving renewables sector and roll out more clean, secure and affordable energy – while helping grow the economy.
The CfD scheme gives renewable energy projects a guaranteed price for the electricity they generate, boosting investment in the UK – which has increased renewable electricity generation from 7% in 2010 to over 40% now. Since 2010, the UK has seen £300 billion of public and private low carbon investment.
We also provide a detailed overview of CfD schemes implemented in Europe. This work comes against the backdrop of an ongoing European debate on reforming the electricity market and the broader introduction of CfDs.
A key design question for renewable support schemes in general, and CfDs in particular, is how to prevent electricity market distortions and preserve short-term, operational market integration without jeopardising the effectiveness of the schemes in leveraging investment of private capital for renewable energy deployment.
A Contract for Difference (CFD) generator works by guaranteeing a set price for electricity – known as a strike price – that generators receive per unit of power output. When the market price for electricity generated by a CFD generator is below the strike price, payments are made by the Low Carbon Contracts Company (LCCC) to the CFD generator to make up the difference.
