Conclusions and outlook Given the high energy density, layout flexibility and absence of geographical constraints, liquid air energy storage (LAES) is a very promising thermo-mechanical storage solution, currently on the verge of industrial deployment.
An alternative to those systems is represented by the liquid air energy storage (LAES) system that uses liquid air as the storage medium. LAES is based on the concept that air at ambient pressure can be liquefied at −196 °C, reducing thus its specific volume of around 700 times, and can be stored in unpressurized vessels.
Briola et al. performed an energy and economic analysis of a LAES plant integrated with an existing large-scale natural gas combined cycle located in Italy, and with an additional gas turbine. The energy analysis was carried out varying, as main parameters, the storage, and the discharge pressures of the LAES.
The hybrid LAES was mainly designed to recover the LNG cold energy that was used to assist the liquefaction process and was able to achieve a round-trip efficiency of 45.44% and an exergy efficiency of 50.7%, the greatest exergy destruction being related to the liquefaction cycle.
