Ferromanganese alloy is produced by the carbothermal reduction of MnO 2 and Mn 2 O 3 ores at high temperature using a submerged arc furnace (SAF). The production rate and chemical composition of liquid ferromanganese alloy in the SAF process are highly dependent on slag flux composition, coke amount, and temperature controlled by electric power.
Using such a simple process model, inputs (mixed ore, slag flux, and coke) and electric energy can be determined to operate the furnace. For example, Tangstad, and Olsen 7 presented a simple mass and heat balance model for ferromanganese production.
The present thermodynamic approach and a simple process simulation model can be utilized for the understanding of the SAF process for ferromanganese production and also for the optimization of the SAF operation conditions to achieve the maximum Mn yield.
